L.I.E Design School 2013

A four-day informal school for design, organised by L.I.E. L.I.E Design School examines the processes and ideas involved in designing, editing and producing published matter. Individual sessions will be led by visiting practitioners and will include talks, seminars, screenings and tutorials.

About L.I.E Design School 2013 tutors:



Holly Wales

Holly Wales is an illustrator and educator based in London. Her work explores a variety of subject matter and is predominantly drawing based. Working as an illustrator, Wales's clients include; Bloomberg, Design Week, Deutsche Bank, Fallon, Financial Times, Frieze, Nestle, The Guardian, The New York Times, Royal College of Art, The V&A, The Telegraph, Uniqlo, and Urban Outfitters.

Wales’s teaching focuses on the importance of ‘thinking through making’, and highlights methods of escape from the inertia caused by access to a wealth of images. She has written projects and taught on illustration and design programmes at Winchester School of Art, University of Westminster, Central St Martins, Brighton University, Camberwell College of Arts, Leeds College of Art & Design, Birmingham Institute of Art & Design, Falmouth University, University of Derby and Cardiff School of Art.

Stephen Smith

Artist and illustrator Stephen Smith runs a London based studio named Neasden Control Centre. The studio’s ethos is centred around a processled practice spanning illustration, typography, motion and installations. Selected clients include Action Aid, Burton Snowboards, MTV, Nam June Paik Centre, Nike, One Dot Zero, Philippe Starck, Universal Records, and Volkswagen.

Smith has released 4 books with publishers Gestalten, Rojo and Mu. He has exhibited his work internationally including at MU (Netherlands), Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art (UK) and the Nam June Paik Centre (Seoul, Korea).

Smith has taught and run workshops at University of Brighton, University of the West of England, Bournemouth University, Kingston University, University of the Arts London, and University of Westminster.

Harry Blackett




















Harry Blackett is one half of An Endless Supply (Harry Blackett and Robin Kirkham) a design studio and independent publishing activity. Working in many roles across multiple formats, a primary objective of the studio is to support the production of new art and writing.

Previous publications include The Clifford Chadwick Clifford Collection, by Lytle Shaw, Curwen Sans Type Specimen (both 2011), and an annotated dust jacket by Elinor Morgan to accompany Brief Interviews with Hideous Men, adapted for the stage by Andy Holden and David Raymond Conroy (2013).

Recent design projects include NOOO, an ebook by Nathan Witt, published by [SPACE]; Move… ment, edited by Federica Bueti, published by Book Works; the website and identity for How to work together, a shared project organised by Chisenhale Gallery, The Showroom and Studio Voltaire; and Shrugging Offing, by Lucy Clout, published by Limoncello (all 2013).

Ken Kirton

Ken Kirton is one half of Studio Hato (Ken Kirton & Jackson Lam), a London based design studio. Since 2010, the studio has been producing books, magazines, exhibitions, clothes, identities, websites, research, dinners, and furniture. Hato Press, a printing and publishing experiment, was set up in 2009 as a support structure. Hato also occupies an occasional studio in Hong Kong.

Selected clients include The Architecture Foundation, Art Licks, Arts Council England, Hannah Barry Gallery, Hayward Gallery, Tate, The Showroom (London), and The Whitechapel Gallery.

Kirton is an Associate Lecturer at London College of Communication. The studio has run workshops and given lectures at Serpentine Gallery, Whitechapel Gallery, Glasgow International, South London Gallery, and Royal College of Art.

Sofia Stevi

Since completing an MA in Communication Design at Central St Martins College of Art in 2009, Sofia Stevi cofounded Friary Road House, an independent press based in South London. She designed and contributed artworks to the experimental poetry journal POETRY, and has been exhibiting her work in the UK and Greece. Stevi’s work has featured in The Whitechapel Book Fair and Copeland Book Market, as well as several English and international publications.

In 2011 Stevi led a daylong bookmaking workshop with L.I.E at Hobart Street, exploring methods of reproduction and book anatomy, focussing on the various techniques employed to make books without the need for a bookbinding press or glue.
